The comics that are haunting me, plus a sneak peak at Skingirl page 8
I need a weekend from my weekend, amiright?!
Your downright exhausted father-to-be D.M. Sayres here, hoping you’re having a tubular end to your holiday weekend and that you’ve eaten just enough hot dogs so as to feel just a little disgusting but not quite enough to be nauseous—the sweet spot.
Today, I wanted to highlight four new series that I’m really stoked about: Dawn Runner, The One Hand, The Six Fingers, and Spectregraph.
First up….
Spectregraph

Tynion + Ward = some real eerie Thirteen Ghosts meets Event Horizon shit. Apparently, this collab has been in the works for a few years now. The story involves a real estate deal for a mansion in Malibu, ghosts (of course), and what seems like a sort of death cult. By the end of the first issue, the stage is set for some real twisted haunted house shenanigans. I’m 1000% in!
Dawn Runner

Attack on Titan…but like…way better. I’m sorry Hajime Isayama fans, but this first issue blows AoT out of the water. The artwork, the mystery, the world-building. It probably wouldn’t exist without the legendary manga, but it handily takes the post-apocalyptic horror prize in this week’s roundup. I honestly have no idea what’s going on by the end of this issue, but I really don’t care. Ram V could write about the leftovers in my fridge and I’d give him my money. Also, the artwork is just phenomenal. Here’s just a taste of this Kaiju masterpiece in the making….
The One Hand / The Six Fingers
With the same letterer (Aditya Bidikar) and author (Ram V) as the above book, is the very graphic noir/sci-fi collaboration, The One Hand/The Six Fingers. These two books, one written by Ram V and one by Dan Watters, cover the same story from two points of view. One from the grizzled (I almost wrote gristled, which tells you how visceral the art is) detective on the edge of retirement, the other follows the killer (or so we believe).
I can’t think of another example like this in modern comics—where two writers come at the same narrative from different angles—but I love it. Can we get a Tynion/Snyder horror double series, please?
Do you know of any other “double series”? And is there a name for this kind of thing I don’t know about?
